about the author

I'm Jess!

I'm a performer, photographer, and a writer. I'm majoring in musical theatre and minoring in writing here at the University of Michigan.

This site showcases my work from the Sweetland Minor in Writing gateway course. Much of it explores the concept of home and how this relates to self-identity. I am from Auckland, New Zealand. As an international student, I'm constantly trying to discover how my roots affect my own sense of belonging.

All pictures on this site are my own and were taken throughout New Zealand. Each image was taken in a place that I've come to recognize as a part of my identity. This is why I've chosen these pictures to showcase my work; they feel the most "me." They show the softer side of who I am and where I come from, and they remind me of my roots. New Zealand is the place where I feel most at peace, but it is also the place where I feel the loneliest. I explore this dichotomy of never quite belonging and yet constantly adapting throughout my writing, and this is why I have chosen these images to accompany my ePortfolio.
